MWC 2014: Samsung Galaxy S5 lands boasting fitness and camera smarts

Samsung's latest flagship is official: the Samsung Galaxy S5 is here and it comes with a host of quite familiar-sounding features.

While there's no real headline feature to push, the device comes rocking a 5.1-inch Full HD Super AMOLED screen and, taking a leaf out of Sony's book, it's water- and dust-resistant.

As expected, there's an iPhone 5S-esque fingerprint scanner on the home key. Rather than just placing your thumb on it, you slide a finger down the key to unlock the screen.
Same difference

Running Android 4.4 Kitkat, Samsung has gone big on the fitness aspect with S Health 3.0 and a heart rate monitor that can get a reading from a finger in around 8 seconds. We're told it's the most "holistic" fitness tracker to date, which should mean it's not a hassle to use.

There are a couple of updates to the UI as well, with a new notifications bar and lock screen being the most notable.

Inside, we're looking at a quad-core Krait 2.5GHz chipset, with 2GB of RAM and a 2800mAh battery backing it up. Samsung's ultra-power-saving mode helps you eke the most out of battery life when activated by, for example, taking the screen down to black and white only. If you think that sounds familiar, then maybe you've used Sony's Stamina Mode.
Strength

Samsung reckons the camera is the "strongest on the market", working a 16MP sensor capable of shooting 4K video, with background refocus, real time HDR and a 0.3s capture rate. There's also a 2.1MP snapper on the front of the handset.

The Galaxy S5 comes with super fast 802.11c Wi-Fi with MIMO, plus it can combine with your LTE connection for a super-speedy Download Booster.

It's quite a slinky-looking device, with dimensions coming in at 142 x 72.5 x 8.1mm and a weight of 145g.

You'll be able to pick the Samsung Galaxy S5 up in marketing-endorsed colours such as "Charcoal Black", "Shimmery White", "Electric Blue" and "Copper Gold" which is surely an oxymoron.

Stay tuned for details on a Samsung Galaxy S5 price and release date, and we'll be bringing you our hands on Galaxy S5 review very soon indeed.
